1. Driving lessons are underway -- I've done three lessons out of seven. The first was nearly useless and I swapped instructors afterwards to someone better... which is disappointing as that first lesson cost a good chunk of change and was a wash.

I've only felt really overwhelmed behind the wheel once, today, when we were practicing turns on one of the main roads. I consider that a victory -- I'm slowly learning the ways of the road. There's a fascinating rhythm to how everyone interacts. It feels like a hive mind I haven't learned how to tap into yet.

I can say with authority that at this point, I fucking hate driving. Maybe I won't in the future, but fuuuck. I hate it.


2. Lower Decks is airing one episode a week. It's making me so happy to hunker down on Thursdays and watch "my" Trek with TL, to watch her enjoy it and nerd out over all the things I've been holding close to my chest for months and months.

I've had to avoid facebook chatter about the new show, though, because there are some trek fans (and I knew there would be) who are determined to hate the show. My friends have been linking me good reviews when they find them, which I absolutely love. I am so proud of this show and I want to share it with everyone who needs some light in their life right now.

I'm disappointed, though: I'm not going to get on the key team for LD going forward, because codename booty spies has dibs on me until november. I've been chasing it, and I had the guy organizing the teams tell me he wishes he could get me, but the timing doesn't line up and I am super duper bummed about it.

Oh well. Booty spies has gorgeous backgrounds, and I'm learning a lot on it... but Trek is my fandom, yall.

Good luck driving. It does eventually start taking up less of one's brain, in my experience.

yessss let me know what you think when you get around to it! It's had a mixed response so far, and I'm curious.

I can't wait for the point when some of this stuff becomes automatic. It's SO MUCH to take into account right now: I'm having to do it all manually, and manage the panic of mistakes.

What parts of Below Decks did you work on?

When driving is automatic you can at least listen to music or audiobooks or something, it can be a mildly pleasant quiet time.

Backgrounds! Especially backgrounds involving ships that we didn't use 3D models for. You won't see a lot of my stuff until episode 3 and onwards, but I did some really cool stuff in the last episode of the season.

aw man! I remember listening to music in the car with my dad being really fun when I was a kid.

I can't wait to see your work! Midnight Gospel was not really my thing, unfortunately, but this probably will be. :)

Oh, for sure! MG was so very much a particular kind of thing. I mean, Lower Decks is too, but the kind of thing it is is "star trek" so.... you'll probably like it. :)

Congratulations on the driving! Be it ever so awful, it is a very useful skill to have (note to self: learn how to drive!)

I haven't seen Lower Decks yet, because I haven't been consuming a lot of media lately, but I have been so proud of you any time I hear it mentioned. It's so cool you were involved with it.

Driving is the biggest pain at first but it really does become automatic after a while. When I was first learning it was THE WORST and I'd come home drenched in sweat and now it's no big.

that is meeeee fully with the sweating and THE WORSTness. But I think the learning has been good in its own way -- it's been ages since I've tackled something that really scared me.

Our roommates have been watching Lower Decks! It's exciting seeing something you worked on!

Yeah, driving has never been fun for pretty much anyone in here, but it does get easier, at least.

I'm looking forward to the day it gets easier! TL and I are looking into getting a used car after this, so as not to fall out of practice.
